What is religion?

It is written: "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. ... If anyone says 'I love God,' yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.  And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother." -1 John 4:16, 20,21

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." -1 Corinthians 13:4-8

It is written: "For ever since the creation of the world His [God's] invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity have been made intelligible and clearly discernable in and through the things that have been made- His handiworks. So [men] are without excuse- altogether without defense or justification; Because when they knew and recognized Him as the God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God, or give Him thanks. But instead they became futile in their thinking- with vain imaginings, foolish reasoning and stupid speculations- and their senseless minds were darkened." -Romans 1:20, 21 Amplified Bible

"This is what God the Lord says- he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 'I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness;'"  -Isaiah 42:5, 6

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I [Jesus] will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls, For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:28-30

"Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." -Joshua 24:14, 15

American Dictionary of the English Language, Noah Webster, 1828:  RELIGION. n. relij’on. [Fr. Sp religion; It. religione; L. religio, from religo, to bind anew ; re and ligo, to bind. This word seems originally to have signified an oath or vow to the gods, or the obligation of such an oath or vow, which was held very sacred by the Romans.]

1. Religion, in its most comprehensive sense, includes a belief in the being and perfections of God, in the revelation of his will to man, in man’s obligation to obey his commands, in a state of reward and punishment, and in man’s accountableness to God; and also true godliness or piety to life, with the practice of all moral duties. It therefore comprehends theology, as a system of doctrines or principles, as well as practical piety; for the practice of moral duties without a belief in a divine lawgiver, and without reference to his will or commands, is not religion. [emphasis added]
2. Religion, as distinct from theology, is godliness or real piety in practice, consisting in the performance of all known duties to God and our fellow men, in obedience to divine command, or from love to God and his law. James i.
Religion will attend you—as a pleasant and useful companion, in every proper place and every temperate occupation of life.-Buckminster.
3. Religion, as distinct from virtue, or morality, consists in the performance of the duties we owe directly to God, from a principle of obedience to his will. Hence we often speak of religion and virtue, as different branches of one system, or the duties of the first and second tables of the law.
Let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion.
-Washington.
4. Any system of faith and worship. In this sense, religion comprehends the belief and worship of pagans and Mohammedans, as well as of Christians ; any religion consisting in the belief of a superior power or powers governing the world, and in the worship of such power or powers. Thus, we speak of the religion of the Turks, of the Hindu's, of the Indians, &c. as well as of the Christian religion. We speak of false religion, as well as of true religion.
5. The rites of religion; in the plural. -Milton

Black's Law Dictionary, 6th Edition:

Religion. Man’s relation to Divinity, to reverence, worship, obedience, and submission to mandates and precepts of supernatural or superior beings. In its broadest sense includes all forms of belief in the existence of superior beings exercising power over human beings by volition (the act or power of willing, choosing, or resolving), imposing rules of conduct, with future rewards and punishments. Bond uniting man to God, and a virtue (moral excellence) whose purpose is to render God worship due him as source of all being and principle of all government of things.

[Nilculnikoff v. Archbishop, etc. of Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church, 142 Misc. 894, 255 N.Y.S. 653, 663.]

As used in constitutional provisions of First Amendment forbidding the “establishment of religion,” the term means a particular system of faith and worship recognized and practiced by a particular church, sect, or denomination.

[Reynolds v, U. S., 98 U.S. 145, 149, 25 LEd. 244; Wolman v, Walter, 433 U.S. 229, 97 S.Ct. 2593, 53 L.Ed.2d 714; Roemer, et al. v. Board of Public Works of Md. 426 U.S. 736, 96 S.Ct. 2337, 49 L.Ed.2d 1.]

"Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Jesus came to them and said. 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"  -Matthew 28:16-20

It is written: "[Rather,] is not this the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every [enslaving] yoke? Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry, and bring the  homeless poor into your house? When you see the naked that you cover him, and that you hide not yourself from [the needs of] your own flesh and blood? Then shall your light break forth as the morning, and your healing [your restoration and the power of a new life] shall spring forth speedily; your righteousness [your justice and your relationship with God] shall go before you [conducting you to peace and prosperity], and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.  -Isaiah 58:6-8 Amplified Bible

Deeds speak louder than words, so keep watch. If you know the difference between a handshake and a fist, and kind words and unkind words, you can understand TRUE Christianity... love never fails! Godly men, women, and children ALWAYS point you back to the Living God Jesus Christ, who always lives to intercede for us!  I say this because cult leaders will attempt to get us away from the Bible and Christ our Savior, and impose their authority over the Lord's authority. -Thomas Millington, Ambassador

From Break Point with Charles Colson:

“The secular elites and a lot of our neighbors tell us we shouldn’t be imposing our views on others. But until we recover a sense of absolute moral truth, we’re going to continue to see scandals… We are foolish if we think we can legislate away the immorality of human beings. I stand as living proof that the cure comes, not from statutes, but from the transforming of the human heart- the embracing of a moral code to which people, by their conscience, bind themselves.

While tough laws may produce some immediate relief and boosting of public confidence, the only long-term answer is to take a bracing dose of reality, to recognize that the real enemy is moral relativism and moral confusion, to embrace once again a solid code by which conscience can be informed…And then we need to go about the business of strengthening the conscience of the nation! This will require a heroic effort- but it is one that Christians are uniquely equipped to undertake. www.prisonfellowship.org:

Blasphemy- (Black's Law Dictionary 6th Ed.): Any oral or written reproach maliciously cast upon God, His name, attributes, or religion [Christianity/ doctrines of Jesus Christ]. In general, blasphemy may be described as consisting in speaking evil of the Deity with an impious purpose to derogate (detract; belittle) from the divine majesty, and alienate the minds of others from the love and reverence of God.  It is purposely using words concerning God calculated and designed to impair and destroy the reverence, respect, and confidence due Him as the intelligent creator, governor, and judge of the world. It embraces the idea of detraction, when used towards the Supreme Being, as "calumny" (false and malicious statement; slander) usually carries the same idea when applied to an individual. It is A WILLFUL AND MALICIOUS ATTEMPT TO LESSON MEN'S REVERENCE OF GOD BY DENYING HIS EXISTENCE OR HIS ATTRIBUTES AS AN INTELLIGENT CREATOR, GOVERNOR, AND JUDGE OF MEN, AND TO PREVENT THEIR HAVING CONFIDENCE IN HIM AS SUCH. ...In English Law, blasphemy is the offence of speaking matter relating to God, Jesus Christ, the Bible, or the Common Prayer, intended to wound the feelings of mankind or to excite contempt and hatred against the church by law established, or to promote immorality

[Jesus/Yeshua:] "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy- that is, every evil, abusive, injurious speaking or indignity against sacred things- can be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the (Holy) Spirit shall not and cannot be forgiven.  And whoever speaks a word against the Son of man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Spirit, the Holy One, will not be forgiven, either in this world and age or in the world and age to come." -Matthew 12:31, 32 Amplified Bible
